Recently, a friend inquired about the easiest option to hide a featured image from an individual post in WordPress.
I had heard of the plugin “Hide Featured Image” so I asked him to try it out. Unfortunately for him, the plugin didn’t work…
Why ?
It was last updated more than 2 years ago and hadn’t been tested with the previous three WordPress versions.
You always want to avoid installing plugins that haven’t been updated for more than a year !!
As a result, I went ahead to try out other options. And in this post, I’ll show you how you can hide a single featured image from a WordPress post.
Check if your WordPress Theme Has the Option to Hide a Featured Image
There may be occasions where you might want to hide an image in WordPress on a particular post, instead of removing it. The main reason is when you want to display an image on your blog’s home page but not on the individual post.
Featured image is an option controlled by WordPress themes, and many of them have the option to hide featured images. So the easiest way is to check if the option is available in your particular theme.
Visit your WordPress dashboard, go to Posts -> All Posts and click on the edit option below any of your WordPress posts.
Under the preview button on the right of your page, you will see similar options like the ones in the screenshot below.
We are using the “Rehub Theme,” and I was able to find the option to hide featured images under Post Settings.
Use a Plugin to Hide Featured Image from your Post
What if your WordPress theme doesn’t have this option? While you can try using “The Hide Feature Image Plugin”, I don’t recommend it due to the following
- It hasn’t been updated since a long time
- It has been receiving a lot of poor reviews
And even if it works, you should know that 52% WordPress vulnerabilities are caused by plugins that may haven’t been updated or poorly coded.
You can also hide a featured image with the help of code but it’s not a very convenient option for beginners.
There is a better way.
Its using the Plugin called “Conditionally display featured image on singular posts and pages”

Bonus Plugin to Manage Featured Images without Hiding Them
There is another fantastic plugin to manage featured images. While it doesn’t allow you to hide featured images, you can do a lot more quite easily.
It’s a plugin by the name of “Quick Featured Images”

You are welcome Cyrill. You’ve certainly done a great job with the Plugin :)
Perfect! Thanks! Was using another plugin that stopped working… Question: if I deactivate the old plugin, will all the featured images it was hiding start showing again? Or are they already showing? (I haven’t checked and wouldn’t know where to start. I’ve been using it a long time)
Hi Jeff, if the old plugin stopped working then the featured images should be showing. But you can ofcourse check. If the plugin isn’t working or outdated, its best to remove it and install the new plugin
Thank you for this informative post. I wanna know should I show the featured image at the beginning of the single post? I confused!
Hi Zia, we are glad you liked the post. Whether you show the featured image or not in the beginning is totally up to you. If you want your audience to go straight into the intro, you don’t need to show it.
Thank you so much :)
